When Is an Alternative Landing Zone Used?

The main beach landing in Ölüdeniz works in the vast majority of conditions, but paragliding is a weather sport. When wind strength or direction makes the beach unsuitable — or when the zone is temporarily congested — pilots switch to pre-planned alternative landing areas.

This is standard operating procedure, not an emergency: every Babadağ pilot knows the alternates by heart and briefs for them before takeoff.

The Main Alternative Areas Around Ölüdeniz

Depending on conditions, pilots use several established options:

Wider sections of the beachfront away from the main zone, used when the primary spot is busy
Open fields on the Ölüdeniz–Ovacık plain, preferred in certain wind directions
Designated grassy areas inland, used mainly by solo pilots in strong sea-breeze cycles

Almost always, yes — the beach zone works in most conditions. Alternates are used on a minority of days, mainly for strong or unusual wind directions, and your pilot will tell you before or during the flight.

Is landing somewhere else dangerous?

No. Alternative zones are established, open areas that pilots train with regularly. The decision to use one is made precisely to keep the landing as safe and comfortable as possible.

How do I get back if I land at an alternate zone?
