Understanding thermals in July and August.
Thermals are rising columns of warm air, created when the sun heats the ground unevenly. In summer, Babadağ's sun-baked rock faces and the temperature contrast with the sea produce powerful, reliable thermals nearly every day.
For pilots, thermals are free altitude: circle inside one and the glider climbs instead of descending. This is what turns a simple glide into a 30-45 minute flight.
On a strong June–August day your pilot may ride thermals to climb above the launch height, extend the flight and show you the full panorama — the Blue Lagoon, Butterfly Valley and the coastline toward Fethiye.
Thermals also add the 'texture' you feel in the air: gentle surges and sinks, like a boat on light waves. It is completely normal and part of the experience. If you prefer minimal movement, pick a morning or sunset slot instead.
The thermal engine follows the sun:
You feel gentle rises and sinks rather than bumps — most passengers describe it like a boat on light waves. Your pilot adapts the flight style to your comfort at any time.
No — Babadağ's summer thermals are strong but well understood, and pilots fly them daily within safe limits. They are the very reason flights last so long here.
Choose the first morning slots or a sunset flight. Both avoid the midday thermal peak while keeping the same views and beach landing.
