Cloudbase for Pilots: The Day's Working Ceiling

For XC and thermal pilots, cloudbase is the single number that defines the day: it sets how high climbs go, how far each glide reaches and how ambitious the route can be.

Over Babadağ, a base well above the 1,960m summit opens the classic ridge runs; a lower base keeps the day local. Blue days with no clouds at all are common in high summer — thermals still work, just without markers.

Estimating Cloudbase Before You Launch

Pilots combine several tools to call the day's base:

  • Forecast soundings and paragliding weather models for the region
  • The spread rule of thumb — the gap between temperature and dew point drives base height
  • Morning observation: where yesterday's first cumulus formed, and how today's sky is building
  • Reports from the first gliders up — the ultimate calibration

Flying With (and Under) the Clouds

Legal cloud clearance is mandatory — stop the climb before the wisps and keep the required distance. Strong cores near base demand earlier exits: plan your leave altitude before entering the climb.

On overdeveloping days, watch for rapid vertical growth and shading. The Ölüdeniz sea breeze usually keeps the coast gentler than inland — one more local advantage.

FAQ – Cloudbase for Pilots

How do I estimate cloudbase without instruments?

Use the temperature/dew-point spread from the morning forecast as a first guess, confirm against the first real cumulus of the day, then calibrate with reports from gliders already climbing.

What is a 'blue day'?

A thermal day with no cumulus markers — the air is too dry for condensation. Thermals still work; pilots navigate by terrain triggers, birds and other gliders instead of clouds.

How close to a cloud can I climb?

Regulations require keeping clear of clouds with prescribed minimum distances. Practically: plan your exit altitude before the core tightens near base, and leave early rather than late.
